Marvel at Banff National Park

Visiting Banff National Park in September is similar to stepping into a scene from a postcard, where the lush greenery of summer subtly transitions to the vibrant hues of autumn.

September’s milder temperatures, fewer crowds, and the masterpiece of nature’s color palette make it an idyllic time for hiking, wildlife spotting, and immersing in the tranquility of the wilderness.

With all of the summer crowds decreasing and the weather becoming more pleasant, there is no time like September to indulge in some infamous Belgium chocolate (or beer if you are more inclined).

Whale Watching in Hermanus, South Africa

This coastal town is famous for sightings of Southern Right Whales, which come incredibly close to the shore from June to November.

In addition, you could see a variety of marine life, including other whales, sharks, dolphins, and seals.

This time of year offers prime viewing before the season draws to a close, making it a perfect addition to your September bucket list.

Run the Medoc Marathon, France

Pop quiz: what might tempt The Bucket List Mermaid and other adventurers into doing a marathon? How about 23 wine tastings?

The entire 26 mile route of the Medoc Marathon stretches through vineyards and gives the runners a chance to sample cheese, ice cream, and even oysters!

This sounds like a good way for me to be sick, but it’s all about the adventure travel!

Hike the Glacier National Park, USA

This is the optimal time to explore Glacier National Park in Montana as the summer crowds disperse, and the larch trees turn a beautiful golden hue.

For all of my outdoor adventurers out there, some good options are hiking on the Highline Trail or the scenic Grinnell Glacier trail if you seek a challenge.

Or, if you are down for getting a little wet and chilly, the rafting in Glacier National Park is exceptional:

Funny story: when I lived in Cambridge, it was always on my bucket list to attend Oktoberfest. However, I was very surprised to learn that it starts and most of the fun stuff takes place in September (seems a little weird to me, but whatever). Anyway, I missed it completely that year🤪

Immerse yourself in this cultural event, brimming with beer, traditional costumes, and folk music, for an experience that’s both lively and authentic.

Witness the Northern Lights in Alaska on a Cruise

September is the return of Aurora Borealis, an atmospheric phenomenon that lights up the night skies.

If you are looking for an easy way to see the lights, an Alaskan cruise might be your best bet.

I have an entire sob story about this, but the lights did appear 2 nights in a row when we were headed back from Glacier Bay. My family also saw the lights in September on our first Alaskan cruise when I was just a little peanut of a traveler!

It is recommended to see gorillas in Africa in the dry season of June to September.

This provides a comfortable and ethical way to track endangered mountain gorillas in Rwanda. And by going in the later end of the dry season, your chances are higher for decreased crowds and prices.

It’s a profound encounter with these majestic creatures in the midst of the lush Virunga Mountains.
