Arches National Park is a treasure trove of natural beauty, where towering sandstone arches, dramatic rock formations, and expansive desert landscapes create an awe-inspiring setting.

For photographers, national park enthusiasts, and travelers chasing the perfect aesthetic, Arches National Park offers one of the most magical sunset experiences in the world.

As a full-time adventurer living in an RV, I can confidently say Arches was one of my favorite and most unique destinations—and there’s nothing quite like watching the sun set through an arch!

But with so much ground to cover, knowing where to watch the sunset in Arches National Park can be overwhelming.

Key Takeaways

Why Sunset is a Great Time to Visit Arches National Park

Sunset transforms Arches National Park into a canvas of vibrant hues.

The deep reds, oranges, and purples of the rock formations become even more dramatic under the soft, golden glow of the setting sun.

The heat of the day fades, making hiking and exploring more comfortable, and the crowds begin to thin, offering a more peaceful experience.

Photographers can take advantage of the “golden hour” light to capture stunning, dynamic landscapes.

Best Sunset Spots at Arches National Park

1. Delicate Arch

Why It’s Great

Arguably the most iconic feature in the park, Delicate Arch stands isolated against the vast sky—the perfect frame for a sunset backdrop.

The arch glows brilliantly in the evening light, making it a bucket-list spot for photographers.

Hiking Involved

A 3-mile round-trip hike with moderate elevation gain.

The trail is exposed, so bring plenty of water.

Tips

Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot, as it can get crowded.

Headlamps are a must for the hike back!

If you can tolerate waking up early, I would recommend coming here at sunrise instead.

My Opinion on Delicate Arch

I have to put Delicate Arch because that is what everybody recommends.

However, I will caution you – everybody recommends it. This means that it is extremely popular.

Although I think that it is an incredible sunset spot in Arches National Park, I would encourage you to have backup options and give the other arches some love too, especially if you are there in peak season.

2. Broken Arch

Why It’s Great

Broken Arch is a lesser-known spot that offers stunning views of the sunset through its unique, fractured formation.

The soft evening light beautifully illuminates the arch and surrounding landscape.

Hiking Involved

You have two options here. You can go straight from the trailhead at the Sand Dune Arch (easy 1.2 miles, 1.9 km), or your can take the Broken Arch Trail Loop (moderate 2.3 miles, 3.7 km).

I would recommend getting there early and going through the Sand Dune Arch first (because it’s just fun and unique).

Tips

This area is usually quieter than other arches, making it a peaceful spot for sunset photography and reflection.

This is also a great spot to go to if you are staying in the Devils Garden Campground.

3. The Windows Section + Double Arch

Why It’s Great

I absolutely love this area of Arches National Park because there are so many notable arches all in one place.

These include: North Window, South Window, Turret Arch, and (across the parking lot) Double Arch.

The combination of arches and vast desert sky creates endless photo opportunities.

Hiking Involved

The Windows Section is an easy 1-mile loop trail.

Across the parking lot is the trail for Double Arch. If you are already here for sunset, I would 100% recommend checking out this section too. It is only about 0.5 miles out &back.

Tips

Climb up behind the North Window for a unique perspective of Turret Arch framed within. This shot is iconic and has been used for several postcards!

The parking lot can be a wee bit chaotic during peak season. Luckily, you can drive in circles until you snag a spot.

4. Balanced Rock

Why It’s Great

This gravity-defying rock formation is easily accessible and offers a surreal foreground for sunset shots.

As the sun dips, Balanced Rock casts dramatic shadows on the desert floor.

Hiking Involved

Minimal; a short 0.3-mile loop trail. I would consider it more of a nature walk than a hike.

Tips

Perfect for photographers looking for quick, stunning shots without a strenuous hike.

The parking lot can be crowded and there is not a lot of space to wait for a spot. Make sure to get their early!

5. Fiery Furnace Viewpoint

Why It’s Great

Named for its maze of reddish rock fins, Fiery Furnace glows intensely during sunset.

Plus, you get one heck of a view of the La Sal Mountains from the back.

Hiking Involved

No hiking required for the viewpoint, but permits are needed for deeper exploration.

Tips

The viewpoint is ideal for those seeking a less crowded sunset experience.

6. Panorama Point

Why It’s Great

Offering expansive views of the park and beyond, Panorama Point is ideal for wide-angle sunset shots.

Hiking Involved

None; it’s a drive-up viewpoint.

Tips

Great for those who want to enjoy the sunset comfortably with a chair and snacks.

Tips for Catching the Perfect Sunset

Arrive Early

Sunrise and sunset are very popular times for photographers and adventurers in Arches National Park.

One of these options doesn’t involve leaving your bed at ungodly hours. Therefore, which one do you think is more popular? Sunset!

Because of this, secure the best viewing spot and set up your gear early.

Best practices include getting to your spot 30-45 minutes before sunset, although this might be earlier if its crowded or at a popular spot (like Delicate Arch).

Check the Weather

Partially cloudy skies often produce the most colorful sunsets.

Respect the Environment

Stay on trails and pack out all trash. Please leave Arches National Park beautiful so that future generations can enjoy its sunsets.

Photography & Viewing Tips

Respect Wildlife

Dusk is a prime time for wildlife activity in Arches National Park.

You might spot desert cottontails, mule deer, and kangaroo rats emerging from their daytime shelters. Keep an eye out for nocturnal predators like coyotes and owls beginning their nightly hunts.

Always observe wildlife from a safe distance and avoid feeding or disturbing them.

Gear Suggestions

If you plan on taking a camera, a tripod is an essential for the low light conditions.

Make sure to bring some wide-angle lenses for landscapes; telephoto lenses for details.

HDR Photography & Low Light

You might also consider taking some HDR shots and layering them for contrasting exposures.

My camera often struggled to capture the vibrance of the sky and the details of the rocks.

The phone did an average job, but was still more grainy than I cared for.

Sunrise vs. Sunset: Which is Better in Arches National Park?

  • Sunrise: Quieter, cooler, and less crowded. Ideal for peaceful photography.
  • Sunset: Warmer light and dramatic shadows. More vibrant colors but busier spots.

Both times offer unique photographic opportunities and bucket list checks—why not experience both?
