Tucked into the rugged San Juan Mountains, Ouray, Colorado, is an adventure lover’s paradise and a must-see destination. Therefore, you need an Ouray Bucket List!
Known as the “Switzerland of America,” this charming mountain town is packed with exciting things to do!
Even as a Colorado local, this place still drops my jaw! I cannot believe that it is right there in my backyard!
I might even make the claim that this is my favorite Colorado mountain town (and trust me, that’s bold for a CO native).
No matter what you choose to do, Ouray delivers unforgettable experiences and memories that will stay with you forever.
Key Takeaways
- Ouray is known for adventure: ice climbing, via ferratas, off-roading, and more.
- One of the clear favorite bucket list activities is visiting the iconic hot springs.
- This town also has numerous waterfalls that you can visit.
- Ouray is also a hub for several other mountain towns, scenic drives, and historical sites.
How to Get to Ouray
From Montrose: Drive south on US-550 for about 35 miles. It’s a straight shot with incredible mountain views.
From Durango: Take US-550 north for approximately 70 miles via the famous Million Dollar Highway. The drive is stunning but includes steep, winding sections—perfect for thrill-seekers!
From Denver: Head west on I-70, then south on US-550 from Montrose. The trip takes about 5.5 hours and passes through some of Colorado’s most beautiful landscapes.
Since public transport isn’t great in these mountain towns, I would consider renting a car.
Now, let’s get started with this epic Ouray Bucket List!
1. Take a Dip in Some Hot Springs
One of the ultimate ways to unwind after an adventure-packed day in Ouray is by soaking in its famous hot springs.
Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly experience or a secluded oasis, the geothermal waters here offer the perfect mix of relaxation and mountain views.
Orvis Hot Springs
For a more serene and clothing-optional experience, head to Orvis Hot Springs, just 10 miles north of Ouray in Ridgway.
This natural oasis features several outdoor soaking pools surrounded by peaceful gardens and panoramic mountain views.
With temperatures ranging from 98 to 112 degrees, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect spot to relax.
Orvis is open year-round and offers a quiet, adults-only atmosphere ideal for those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle.
Please keep in mind: people take the “clothing optional” seriously. I don’t have a photo for obvious reasons…
Ouray Hot Springs Pool
The Ouray Hot Springs Pool is a local favorite and a must-do on any bucket list.
This expansive facility features multiple pools at varying temperatures, from a cooler lap pool to hot, mineral-rich soaking pools.
It’s family-friendly, with waterslides and a splash area for kids, but also has quieter spots for those seeking tranquility.
Open year-round, it’s an ideal spot to take in the snow-capped peaks while soaking your cares away.
💡Pro tip: visit at sunset for magical views of the alpenglow on the surrounding mountains.
I would recommend this option if you have children or want a “clothing required” policy. Personally, I think that Orvis is the winner.
2. Stroll Around Historic Downtown Ouray
End your adventure-filled day by wandering the streets of historic downtown Ouray.
Pop into local shops, grab a bite at one of the charming restaurants, or sip a locally brewed beer.
The Victorian-era architecture adds a touch of charm to this already picturesque town.
3. Go Off-Roading on the Alpine Loop
Adventure seekers will love the rugged trails of the Alpine Loop, accessible by 4×4 or ATV.
This 60+ mile loop winds through historic mining towns, alpine meadows, and high mountain passes like Engineer and Cinnamon.
Keep in mind that it is seasonal, you should start early, and be prepared to make some sketchy maneuvers.
Rent a Jeep in town or join a guided tour to ensure you navigate safely and enjoy the breathtaking terrain.
3. Conquer a Via Ferrata
The Via Ferrata is the perfect adrenaline rush and one of the most adventurous things to do in Ouray!
This unique climbing route uses steel rungs, cables, and ladders to navigate sheer rock faces. No climbing experience? No problem!
Guided tours with gear rentals make it accessible for beginners, while seasoned climbers will love tackling the course on their own.
This was my first time doing a Via Ferrata since Peru and it did not disappoint!

4. Explore the Ice Park in Winter
For winter adventurers, the Ouray Ice Park is a must.
This world-famous ice climbing destination features over 200 routes carved into a frozen canyon. It is actually known as the “ice climbing capitol of the world”!
The annual Ouray Ice Festival in January is a thrilling spectacle not to be missed on your Ouray bucket list.
5. Drive the Million Dollar Highway
Buckle up for one of the most scenic drives in the country.
The Million Dollar Highway (U.S. Route 550) winds through the San Juan Mountains between Ouray and Silverton.
This drive offers hairpin turns, jaw-dropping vistas, and plenty of pullouts for photos.
Make sure your brakes are in good condition, and give yourself time to savor the views.
6. Hike the Perimeter Trail
If there’s one trail that captures the heart and soul of Ouray, it’s the Perimeter Trail.
It’s a bucket-list hike that offers a little bit of everything and is accessible right from downtown.
The perimeter trail is moderate with some steep sections, narrow paths, and elevation changes.
The full loop typically takes 4-5 hours, but you can break it into smaller segments if you’re short on time.
Highlights along the way include four waterfalls, a natural tunnel, the ice park, panoramic viewpoints, and even a hidden troll!

- Box Canyon Falls: Found within Box Canyon Falls Park, this roaring waterfall thunders into a narrow canyon. Walk across a suspension bridge for a thrilling close-up or take the High Bridge Trail for an aerial view.
- Bear Creek Falls: Accessible from the Million Dollar Highway, Bear Creek Falls cascades dramatically into the Uncompahgre Gorge. There’s a convenient pullout for viewing, making it perfect for a quick stop.
- Bridal Veil Falls: Near Telluride, this is Colorado’s tallest free-falling waterfall. You can hike, bike, or 4×4 your way to this iconic spot.
8. Tour the Ouray Alchemist Museum
For a change of pace, visit the Ouray Alchemist Museum, a fascinating collection of pharmaceutical artifacts and history.
The guided tour dives into the story of medicine in the Old West, complete with antique bottles and apothecary tools. It’s a quirky but captivating way to spend an afternoon.
9. Take a Trip Up to Telluride
An hour’s drive from Ouray, Telluride is a must-visit for its charm, scenic beauty, and outdoor activities.
Drive through stunning mountain passes on Highway 62, explore Telluride’s historic downtown, and ride the free gondola for breathtaking views.
While you are here, you can check out the Bridal Veil Falls hike. Funny story – I did this hike spontaneously in a skirt and Doc Martins.
💡 Pro Tip: Park at the Mountain Village and take the free gondola. Then, you save money on parking and the gondola is breathtaking!
10. Uncompahgre River Walk Loop
For a more relaxing break, stroll the Uncompahgre River Walk Loop.
This easy, family-friendly trail hugs the river and offers picturesque views of the mountains.
It’s a great way to connect with nature, spot wildlife, and take in Ouray’s serene beauty at a gentler pace.
We ended up staying at Ouray Riverside Resort in our RV and this happened to back to this lovely walk!

Rent a paddleboard and glide across the crystal-clear waters of Ridgway Reservoir, or head further into Montrose.
The park also features hiking trails, picnic spots, and sandy beaches, making it an ideal day trip for families and outdoor lovers.
12. Have a Drink at a Mountain Rooftop Bar
*Please note that this Ouray bucket list idea is for adults over 21 only!
Until this, I had only had a drink at a city rooftop bar. I am here to say that having a nice glass of wine with 360° mountain views is nothing short of magical!
For my best friend’s birthday, we chose the The Imogene Hotel and Rooftop Bar. I liked this one because you got to see mountains on all sides.
The other option was The Ouray Brewery. Their rooftop patio is a local favorite spot, offering craft beers, great food, and panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. This one was pretty packed, so plan accordingly.
Raise a glass and watch the sun set over this dreamy mountain town!
13. Explore Ghost Towns
Discover the eerie charm of Colorado’s abandoned mining towns near Ouray:
- Animas Forks: A well-preserved ghost town reachable via the Alpine Loop. Explore old cabins and mining equipment surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes. It’s about 1.5 hours away from Ouray.
- Ironton: Located just 20 minutes from Ouray, Ironton offers fascinating ruins and easy access for history buffs.
- Red Mountain Town: Found along the Million Dollar Highway, this ghost town features remnants of the area’s rich mining history.
Bring your camera and a sense of wonder as you explore these remnants of the Old West.
As an adventurer, it is my humble opinion that the best way to experience some of these ghost towns is with off-roading tours like the one I’ll link below👇
