Things that Make Rocking M Ranch Campground Unique
Nestled in the heart of Cripple Creek, Colorado, Rocking M Ranch Campground offers an unparalleled experience for both RV and tent campers.
Prime Location
Its prime location provides easy access to the surrounding natural beauty and historic attractions, making it an ideal base for exploration.
Cripple Creek is only a 10-minute drive, offering guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture, history, and amenities.
Amazing Views
The campground boasts breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains, providing a serene and picturesque setting that is perfect for relaxation and outdoor activities.
If you are in one of the giant pull-through spots out front, you will be treated to mountain views all around you. If you decide on one of the smaller spots out back, you will be sweetly tucked into a bed of trees and the forest behind.
This combination of stunning landscapes, strategic positioning, and proximity to local attractions makes Rocking M Ranch Campground a truly unique and memorable destination.
Lesser Known Part of Colorado
You always hear about Denver, Colorado Springs, and other major tourist parts of Colorado. Cripple Creek is different. It is small and filled to the brim with locals and mountain charm.
If you are looking for something off the beaten path, this might be the area for you.
Just because it isn’t as known doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth it. There is a ton of history here (primarily mining history) and ample opportunities for outdoor mountain adventures!
Best Time to Go to Rocking M Ranch Campground
While Rocking M Ranch Campground offers a delightful experience no matter when you go, the fall season stands out as an exceptional time to visit.
Autumn in Cripple Creek, Colorado, is characterized by crisp air and a burst of vibrant colors, particularly in the aspen trees which transform into a stunning display of golden hues.
This period is ideal for enjoying the natural beauty without the summer crowds, allowing for a more peaceful and immersive experience.
The cooler temperatures make outdoor activities more comfortable, and the picturesque fall foliage provides a captivating backdrop for hiking, photography, and relaxation.
Another great time to visit is in late spring. When I was there in June, the weather was exceptionally pleasant, with subtle sitings of wildflowers throughout the mountains and at our site.

Best Spots at Rocking M Ranch Campground
Before we start, I would say that Rocking M Ranch Campground is divided into two major sections: the long pull-throughs in the front (sites 25-30) and then the back section with smaller sites and the office).
Big Rig Pull-Throughs
If you drive a big RV (like moi), site 30 is hands down the best spot in the entire campground.
There is no shade or trees, but it more than makes up for it with the total mountain views that surround you.
Plus, it is an extremely long pull-through spot (which makes my heart leap with joy with my beast of a rig). It also is a full hookup.
Since it is on the end, it feels isolated no matter how many people show up right next to you. We would often joke that it felt like we were the only people there, even though the spots right next to us were filled.
The Back Section
For a more “back woods, isolated” vibe, the spots in the back are the way to go.
Please keep in mind that these do not offer sewer, but have electricity and water. Check beforehand to make sure that you are booking a site that accommodates your camping needs. You can rent a honey wagon for a fee if you choose one of these sites without sewer.
In this section, 12 was my favorite (and the host’s favorite), with 11 taking second place. These are more isolated than the others and offer plenty of trees to retreat into.
Views You Will Get at Rocking M Ranch Campground
At Rocking M Ranch Campground, visitors are treated to some spectacular views of Colorado.
Nestled against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, the campground provides panoramic vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see.
It is also near Pike’s Peak – “America’s Mountain” which is stunning to hike or drive.
To the west, the majestic peaks rise high, often capped with snow, creating a striking contrast against the clear blue sky.
As you look out from various vantage points within the campground, you’ll discover lush meadows dotted with wildflowers, and in the autumn, a sea of golden aspen leaves that shimmer in the sunlight.
The sunsets here are particularly breathtaking, with the sky transforming into a canvas of vibrant oranges, pinks, and purples, offering a perfect end to a day spent exploring the natural beauty of the region.
Keep in mind that if you are in the front pull-through section, it is more open mountain views. If you’re in the back, you will be more immersed in the trees.

Facilities at Rocking M Ranch Campground
I found that this campsite is more adventurous than some in Colorado.
While I do not think that this is necessarily a bad thing, the facilities are limited. There are no showers, bathrooms (other than 2 porta-potties), or laundry.
Most people are camping on vacation, so this isn’t necessarily needed. However, it does make life a little interesting for us full-timers.
Luckily, we had full hookups, so it wasn’t the end of the world. Unfortunately, I have a strong aversion to showering in my camper, so I had to get a little creative.
Additionally, there are picnic areas with tables, perfect for family gatherings or leisurely meals surrounded by the stunning landscape.
For recreation, there’s a basic on-site playground for children, as well as a tetherball and sitting area by the main office.
Staff at Rocking M Ranch Campground
The staff at Rocking M Ranch Campground are dedicated to providing an exceptional experience for all guests.
Known for their warm hospitality and vast knowledge of the local area, the team is always ready to assist with any needs or inquiries.
Whether you require help setting up your campsite, guidance on the best hiking trails, or tips for nearby attractions, the staff is eager to share their expertise.
I have to give them a MASSIVE shoutout. Before our stop here, we were emergency evacuated due to a forest fire! We called them panicking. They were beyond understanding and helped us out by extending our stay a few days earlier on very short notice.
They made a very scary and stressful situation better by giving us somewhere to evacuate!
Since then and after arriving, their hospitality has really stood out. They are just the nicest people!
Is There Shade at Rocking M Ranch Campground?
At Rocking M Ranch Campground, shade availability varies depending on the campsite location.
The long, big rig pull-through spots with sewer hookups do not have shade but compensate with impressive mountain views, offering a picturesque backdrop for your stay.
In contrast, the spots located at the back of the campground are nestled amongst plentiful trees, providing ample shade and a cooler, more secluded environment.
This diversity in campsite options allows guests to choose between open spaces with scenic vistas or shaded retreats immersed in nature.
Is Rocking M Ranch Campground Pet Friendly?
Rocking M Ranch Campground is indeed pet-friendly, welcoming furry friends to join in on the camping adventure.
With designated pet areas and ample space to explore, Rocking M Ranch Campground ensures that pets, whether dogs or cats, can enjoy the great outdoors alongside their owners.
Speaking of that, if you didn’t know, I travel full-time with 2 cats. They were a HIT here and got LOTS of love!
There is a limit of two pets per campsite to ensure a pleasant experience for all guests.
Is Rocking M Ranch Campground Big Rig Friendly?
Rocking M Ranch Campground is exceptionally big-rig friendly, providing some of the largest pull-through spots available.
This is one of the biggest pull-through spots that I have ever been in! My 40+ foot fifth wheel fits comfortably, along with the massive truck and an extra car, and there is still room to spare.
The spaciousness ensures that even the longest and largest of rigs can be accommodated with ease, making it a perfect destination for those traveling with significant setups.
With such ample space, maneuvering, and parking are hassle-free, adding convenience and peace of mind to your camping experience.
Please note that there are 11 pull-through spots and 19 back-in spaces. If you choose the back side of this campground, getting into some spaces might be a little tight with trees.
Type of Hookup at Rocking M Ranch Campground
At Rocking M Ranch Campground in Colorado, the type of hookup available varies depending on the campsite location.
There are 30 total campsites with electricity (50/30/20 amp) and water at each.
The big rig pull-through spots (sites 25-30) are equipped with full hookups, including water, sewer, and 50-amp electrical service, ensuring that guests have all the amenities they need for a comfortable stay.
However, some of the smaller, more secluded spots nestled in the trees offer a more rustic experience with limited hookups.
These sites may provide only partial hookups or none at all, making them ideal for campers who prefer a simpler, more back-to-nature experience.
This variety ensures that Rocking M Ranch Campground can cater to a wide range of camping preferences and needs.
Things to do Near Rocking M Ranch Campground
Hiking and Nature Trails
The surrounding area of Rocking M Ranch Campground offers numerous hiking and nature trails suited for all skill levels.
Whether you are an avid hiker looking for a challenging trek or a casual walker wishing to enjoy a stroll through scenic landscapes, there is something for all levels.
The trails provide a wonderful way to explore the local flora and fauna, enjoy stunning views, and immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature.
My personal favorite was Horsethief Falls. It was very close to the campsite, shaded, easy, and ended with a waterfall.
Cripple Creek
Known primarily for its gambling (ironically), Cripple Creek is oozing with small mountain town charm.
We were joking that it felt like Vegas had a baby with Estes Park and out pooped a cowboy. It feels like you’ve gone back in time to the Old West, but then you go inside and it’s all casinos. It’s probably one of the most quirky Colorado towns I’ve been to if I’m being honest.
There is plenty to do within town besides gambling though including seeing a Melodrama, taking a train, museums, and more!
Pro Tip: Our favorite restaurant here is called Maggie’s. It’s family-friendly and, no joke, and has the lowest drink prices that I have seen in my entire life. I’m talking $1.75 for a well drink. So…do with that information what you will. And be responsible!
Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine
If you are looking for something unique to the area, check out the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine!
As I mentioned before, this place is like stepping back in time to the wild west with the mining boom. In fact, Cripple Creek is known as the “World’s Greatest Gold Camp”. There are gold mines everywhere!
At the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, you descend 1000 feet below the ground to see what gold mining was like back in the day.
It is one of the only vertical shaft gold mine tours in America!
Victor
Victor is another town that is very close to the Rocking M Ranch. I went here a few times to work and it was filled with cute coffee shops and boutique shops.
My favorite part was wandering through the Victor Hotel, which is presumably haunted!
Royal Gorge and Canyon City
If you are looking for some heart pumping adventure, the Royal Gorge is about an hour drive away.
This area boasts some of the best rafting in Colorado. But be warned, this is not for the faint of heart!
You can listen to the full podcast episode below of our dramatic tail of rafting the Royal Gorge👇
Local Secret – Rita the Rock PLanter
Here’s one that you will only hear from a local! There is a wooden sculpture known as “Rita the Rock Planter”.
This is a charming little troll that is similar to the one in Breckenridge. As per the local recommendations, we went to visit her during sunset and she did not disappoint! I even took my cats!
Room for Improvement
While Rocking M Ranch Campground has much to offer, there are always a few areas for improvement.
One aspect to consider is the proximity to other rigs, especially if you are using the pull-through spaces out front.
This can sometimes detract from the sense of seclusion some campers seek. This is why I would recommend trying to snag site 30 or 25 to maximize that isolated feel.
Additionally, at certain points within the campground, the sound of the nearby highway can be noticeable, potentially disrupting the natural tranquility.
Lastly, the facilities available at the campground are somewhat limited, which might not meet the expectations of campers looking for a more extensive range of amenities. I would have loved a shower!
Despite these drawbacks, the overall experience remains positive, with the natural beauty and various activities providing a memorable stay.
Would I Recommend Rocking M Ranch Campground?
Ultimately, I would recommend Rocking M Ranch Campground to those who prioritize immersive natural experiences and outdoor activities over luxurious amenities.
The scenic trails, diverse wildlife, and opportunities for horseback riding create an exceptional environment for anyone looking to disconnect from the bustle of daily life and reconnect with nature.
I hate to rate anything on “vibe”, but Rocking M Ranch is just adorable! It just feels like a mountain retreat that would make any CO local salivate.
For outdoor enthusiasts and families seeking adventure and tranquility, Rocking M Ranch Campground offers a memorable and enjoyable stay.
If you have stayed here before, feel free to comment on this post your thoughts so that you can help other adventurers and campers!
