Glen Eyrie Castle at a Glance
Brief History of Glen Eyrie
Built in 1871 by General William Jackson Palmer (the railroad tycoon and founder of Colorado Springs) this castle was his love letter to the wild Colorado landscape and, of course, his beloved wife, Queen.
Designed in an English Tudor style, Glen Eyrie combines castle grandeur with just enough rugged charm to remind you that youโre still in Colorado – not the English countryside (though it might feel like you are for a minute!).
Expect turrets, hidden staircases, towering stone walls, and that perfect mix of elegance and nature that photographers drool over.
Imagine if Downton Abbey had a fling with Coloradoโs wild landscapes โ thatโs Glen Eyrie.
Where is glen Eyrie Castle?
Glen Eyrie sits tucked right against the towering red rocks of Garden of the Gods.
Seriously โ step out the door, and youโre looking at some of the most jaw-dropping scenery Colorado has to offer.
Itโs secluded enough to feel like a hidden retreat, but just minutes from downtown Colorado Springs.
Whoโs going to fall in love with Glen Eyrie?
- Photographers chasing those I-canโt-believe-this-is-Colorado shots
- Luxury travelers who want unique stays over cookie-cutter hotels
- History lovers who geek out over castles, hidden rooms, and Old West stories
- Quiet retreaters looking to unplug somewhere peaceful (there aren’t even TVs in the rooms)

The Glen Eyrie Experience: What to Expect
So whatโs it actually like stepping inside this Colorado castle?
Letโs break it down โ from the photo magic to the tea service, Iโm giving you the unfiltered scoop.
Accommodations at Glen Eyrie Castle
If youโre booking a stay, know this: not all rooms are created equal.
Castle Rooms
These gems are full of old-world character, original architectural details, and views thatโll have you feeling like royalty.
Theyโre not flashy modern luxury, but they ooze charm. And, each one is totally unique.
If the room isn’t occupied, they normally have them open so that you can peek inside.
Other Lodges on Property
Functional, clean, but more retreat-center than luxury resort. In fact, several of my family members have gone on retreats here.
Some areas could definitely use a refresh if youโre chasing a high-end experience.
Food & Tea Service
The famed Glen Eyrie high tea is an experience – served in elegant rooms with views of the canyon or garden.
The atmosphere is lovely, and itโs fun to lean into the castle fantasy (donโt be shy about dressing up a little).
โ The good: The setting is stunning, the tea selection is solid, and itโs a unique way to soak up the castle vibes.
โ The real talk: The food itself isโฆ fine. Think good, not mind-blowing. The service is warm and attentive, but youโre here for the atmosphere, not a Michelin-star experience.
Each time that I’ve stayed in Glen Eyrie, I have also gotten breakfast coupons. I would recommend taking the breakfast out on the terrace if possible.
Grounds & Amenities
The castle sits on over 700 acres, and itโs worth exploring every inch.
Youโll find trails that wind through the canyon, quiet garden corners, benches with views youโll want to sit on forever, and hidden spots that seem made for photographers.
Thereโs also a bookstore, gift shop, and a few small gathering spaces – but the main amenities are peace and scenery.
Events & Atmosphere
Glen Eyrie is owned by a Christian organization, so youโll see spiritual retreats and themed events on the calendar.
Good to know
- Weddings happen here too – magical for couples, but can mean certain areas are closed off or busy.
- Check the calendar if you want maximum quiet and access.

Is Glen Eyrie Castle Worth It? My Honest Review
Alright, letโs get to the heart of it: Is Glen Eyrie Castle actually worth your time, money, and precious bucket list space?
The short answer? It depends what kind of magic youโre chasing.
Whatโs worth raving about?
A truly unique location + architecture for Colorado.
Letโs face it โ you donโt expect to find a castle tucked between red rock canyons.
Glen Eyrie delivers serious storybook vibes that feel one-of-a-kind.
The setting is next-level gorgeous. The backdrop of Garden of the Gods, wildlife sightings, and ever-changing light? Photographer heaven.
It offers a quiet, private, unplugged atmosphere. You canโt help but slow down here. If youโre craving a peaceful retreat or a place to clear your head (or memory card), this is it.
Plus, there are photo opportunities everywhere. From turret windows to secret gardens, every corner begs to be captured.

What might leave you wanting more?
Some rooms could use a refresh.
The castle rooms charm with character, but donโt expect modern luxury finishes. A few could definitely benefit from an update to match the price point.
Service is solid, but not 5-star resort level. Friendly, helpful, but youโre not getting the ultra-pampered feel.
Limited availability can frustrate. Castle rooms and tea reservations book out fast – and you might need to plan well in advance or be flexible on dates.
Also, keep in mind that while the religious messaging isn’t “in your face”, it is still prevalent. I didn’t mind one bit, but some travelers might.
Whoโs going to fall head over heels for Glen Eyrie?
- Photographers seeking a unique, fairy-tale setting
- Couples looking for a romantic escape with serious ambiance
- Luxury travelers who value distinctive experiences over marble bathrooms and butler service
Who might want to skip it?
- Travelers wanting true five-star luxury service + amenities
- Those craving ultra-modern comforts – Glen Eyrie is about charm, not cutting-edge tech or design

Glen Eyrie Visitor Tips
If youโre ready to plan your castle escape, hereโs what you really need to know so you can make the most of it – and avoid any โugh, I wish Iโd known thatโ moments.
Booking Tea, Tours, and Rooms
Tea service
Book at least 2โ4 weeks ahead – even sooner for weekends or holidays. The castleโs tea is popular with both locals and visitors.
Tours
Castle tours can sell out, especially in peak seasons (spring through fall). A week or two ahead is smart.
They also have guided hiking tours and educational tours available.
Overnight stays
If youโre eyeing a castle room (and you should if you want that full fairy tale vibe!), book 2โ3 months in advance.
The castle rooms are limited and go fast.
If you are in one of the lodges, it is cheaper, but it doesn’t feel anything like the castle.
Dress Code for Tea + Dining
Thereโs no formal dress code, but this is your chance to have a little fun!
Tea-goers often wear smart casual – think sundresses, nice jeans with a blouse, or slacks + a button-up.
No need for formal wear, but leave the hiking gear for your Garden of the Gods trip.
๐ก Pro tip: A pop of color looks great in photos with the neutral castle backdrop!
Accessibility Notes
Glen Eyrie is historic – which means charm, but also some accessibility limitations.
- Some castle rooms and upper floors and may not be wheelchair accessible (ask when booking).
- Main tea and dining areas are generally accessible, but parts of the grounds have uneven paths or stairs.
- Staff are helpful and will do what they can to accommodate, so itโs worth calling ahead.
- I did find multiple elevators, but they are tiny and historic!
Pricing Transparency โ Whatโs a Splurge, Whatโs Reasonable?
- Tea service: Around $35โ$50 per person (splurge for the experience, not necessarily the food)
- Castle tours: ~$12โ$15 per adult – totally reasonable for the insight + photo ops
- Overnight stay: Castle rooms usually run $180โ$300+/night depending on season and room type. Lodges are a bit less.
Worth it? The castle room + tea combo feels like a splurge-worthy bucket list experience – but if youโre just after the views, a tour might scratch that itch.

Photographerโs Guide to Glen Eyrie Castle
If you know me…you know I geek out on photography. And Glen Eyrie gave me some of my most epic shots yet!
This place is a goldmine of photo ops – where medieval fantasy meets Coloradoโs wild beauty.
But timing, location, and a few inside tips can make all the difference between nice shots and wall-worthy ones.
Best Photo Spots in Glen Eyrie

The angles are endless – front facade at sunrise, side turrets framed by pines, or from below to make the castle look towering and dramatic.
The Rose Garden
Secret-garden vibes, ivy-covered walls, stone benches – perfect for portraits or dreamy detail shots.

I didn’t see that it is occupied, but there is also a pretty epic eagle’s nest perched high on a cliff.
Best Times of Day + Lighting Tips
- Golden hour is magic, but not necessary.
- Early morning: soft light on the front of the castle, often with misty canyon views.
- Late afternoon: the castle glows against the red rocks, and the sky puts on a show.
- Midday: Harsh light can be tricky – better for detail shots in the shade or interiors.
- Blue hour: The castle lights come on, creating a gorgeous moody vibe (especially in winter).
- Night: The courtyard of the castle is illuminated with string lights that are magical if you have the right photography gear.

Drone Policy + Limitations
Glen Eyrie is private property, and drone use is not allowed without prior written permission.
Theyโre strict about this to protect guest privacy and wildlife.
If aerial shots are a must for you, contact their staff well in advance – but know they rarely approve casual drone use.
They do have some rules for photography/videos, so make sure you are respecting them.
Seasonal Photo Magic
- Spring: The Rose Garden starts blooming, and fresh green pops everywhere.
- Summer: Lush foliage, long golden hours, and lots of wildlife out and about.
- Fall: The canyon explodes with color!
- Winter: Snow-dusted turrets, frosted gardens, and a castle that looks like it belongs in Narnia.

Tips for People-Free Shots
- Go early: First tour slot or sunrise wander = quiet grounds and soft light.
- Weekdays > weekends: Fewer visitors, especially in off-season months (late fall, winter, early spring).
- Explore off the main paths: The gardens and upper trails often stay empty even during busier times.
- Stay overnight: Guests have access to certain areas before day visitors arrive.

My Personal Take on Glen Eyrie as a Colorado Local
For photographers: This place is a dream.
The blend of medieval architecture and dramatic Colorado scenery will give you shots you canโt get anywhere else in the state.
The light, the textures, the unexpected moments (bighorn sheep photobombs) – itโs magic if you plan it right.
For luxury travelers: I say go if youโre after a memorable, unique stay over a pampered, ultra-luxe one. Book a castle room. Do the tea. Lean into the experience.
Just know youโre coming for the ambiance, not the amenities.
Bottom line: Glen Eyrie might just surprise you. Itโs not perfect โ but itโs unforgettable. And thatโs what makes it bucket-list material.
