Among the countless trails in the area of Glenwood Springs and Rifle, two hikes stand out as must-dos: the iconic Hanging Lake and the serene Rifle Falls. 

Of course, the reason that these are our top contenders for the “best hike in Glenwood Springs” is the fact that they both have (multiple) jaw-dropping waterfalls.

But which one should you choose for your next outdoor escapade? 

As a Colorado local and full-time RVer, I have had the pleasure of exploring these areas multiple times, and I have noticed some striking differences between the two.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a peaceful nature walk, this guide will help you compare these two trails and decide which one best suits your style.

The falls are easily accessible, making this a fantastic option for a day trip from Glenwood Springs, where you can enjoy the beautiful Colorado countryside along the way.

The Winner for Location is…

Hanging Lake! 

Hanging Lake is conveniently only about a 15-minute drive from downtown Glenwood. Rifle Falls, on the other hand, is more of a journey at around 40 minutes. 

Both are still doable within a day, but Hanging Lake definitely has a more convenient location from Glenwood Springs. 

Luckily, both drives are stunning, so you won’t be bored.

What Is Hiking Hanging Lake Like?

This famous CO hike offers stunning views of the surrounding cliffs and dense forest. 

What is unique about Hanging Lake is that you are often hiking next to a river or waterfall for the entire duration of the hike.

For this reason alone, it is one of my favorite hikes in Colorado, let alone the best Glenwood Springs hike.

Once at the top, the lake itself is a crystal-clear turquoise oasis, suspended on the edge of a cliff.

Lush hanging gardens cling to the limestone walls, and the sound of waterfalls fills the air. It’s a sight unlike any other and well worth the effort.

However, because of its popularity, Hanging Lake is often crowded, especially during peak season. You’ll need a permit to hike here, which helps manage the number of visitors and preserve the fragile ecosystem.

What is Rifle Falls Like?

On the other hand, Rifle Falls offers a more laid-back, yet equally rewarding experience. 

The waterfalls are only a short walk from the parking lot. The moment you step onto the path, you’re enveloped by the soothing sounds of nature, leading you to the highlight of the hike: the triple waterfalls.

Rifle Falls State Park is famous for these three cascading waterfalls, which tumble over a limestone cliff into a lush, green grotto. 

The sight is nothing short of spectacular, and the cool fall mist provides a refreshing respite on a warm day. 

Beyond the falls, you can explore easy hiking trails that give you different perspectives of the waterfalls. You also will have the opportunity to explore some small limestone caves.

While Rifle Falls is popular, it’s generally less crowded than Hanging Lake, and no permit is required, making it a more spontaneous adventure.

Both Hanging Lake and Rifle Falls offer you incredible mountain views and waterfalls! They are both unique in their own way and are both great contenders for the best Glenwood Springs hike.

Nature and Scenery

Hanging Lake

The beauty of Hanging Lake extends beyond the lake itself. 

As you hike, you’ll be surrounded by a variety of flora, including aspen and conifer trees, along with unique mosses and ferns thriving in the moist environment. 

Wildlife enthusiasts might spot mule deer, chipmunks, or even a black bear (from a safe distance, of course!). 

The geological formations along the trail, especially the travertine deposits around the lake, add to the otherworldly feel of this hike.

Rifle Falls

Rifle Falls is a botanical wonderland. The constant spray from the waterfalls creates a microhabitat where vibrant mosses, ferns, and wildflowers flourish. 

The lush greenery contrasts beautifully with the rugged limestone cliffs, and the gentle stream that flows from the falls is teeming with life. 

Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting a variety of species, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a bobcat or other wildlife in the quieter parts of the park.

Hanging Lake!

Hanging Lake offers more vast mountainous canyons and landscapes to gawk at, where you would have to hike the Coyote Trail to see some mountain views at Rifle Falls. 

Yet, Hanging Lake does not win this category by much. Rifle Falls also has caves to explore while Hanging Lake does not. 

Basically, both Rifle Falls and Hanging Lake will not leave you wishing for a better view.

How Difficult is Hanging Lake?

Hanging Lake is often described as a short but challenging hike, making it a rewarding adventure for those who are up for a bit of a workout. 

The trail is 1.2 miles each way, but it packs a punch with a steep ascent of about 1,200 feet in elevation gain. 

The path is rocky and uneven in many areas, requiring hikers to navigate over tree roots, boulders, and a series of switchbacks. 

While the trail is well-maintained, the combination of the incline and rugged terrain can be tough, especially for beginners or those not accustomed to hiking at higher elevations. 

However, the effort is well worth it, as the stunning sight of the turquoise waters of Hanging Lake and its surrounding waterfalls provide a breathtaking reward at the summit.

For my Colorado locals, this hike should be a breeze.

How Difficult is Rifle Falls?

Rifle Falls offers an accessible and enjoyable hiking experience, perfect for all ages and skill levels. 

The main attraction, the triple waterfalls, is just a short walk from the parking area, making it easily reachable for everyone, including families with young children and those with limited mobility. 

For those looking to explore a bit further, the Coyote Trail is an ideal option. This 0.7-mile loop is relatively flat and well-maintained, winding through lush greenery and offering stunning views of the falls from various angles. 

You only go up about a whopping 82 feet (which feels like nothing compared to the 1,200 ascent of Hanging Lake).

The trail also leads to small caves and overlooks, adding an extra element of adventure without requiring any strenuous effort. 

The Winner for Difficulty is…

Rifle Falls!

Rifle Falls is a peace of cake compared to Hanging Lake. This makes it perfect for beginner hikers, kids, and adventurers not accustomed to high elevation. 

Time

How Long Does it Take to Hike Hanging Lake?

Hiking to Hanging Lake typically takes about 2 to 4 hours round trip, depending on your pace and how much time you spend enjoying the scenery at the top. 

Many hikers like to spend extra time at the lake itself, soaking in the beauty of the turquoise waters, waterfalls, and hanging gardens, which can add to the overall time. 

Important Tip: Don’t miss the extra hike to Sprouting Rock! This gives you access to 2 more epic waterfalls! 

The descent is quicker but still requires caution due to the rocky terrain. Plan for a half-day adventure to fully appreciate the trail and its stunning rewards.

How Long Does It Take to Hike Rifle Falls?

Hiking around Rifle Falls is a quick and leisurely experience, typically taking around 30 minutes to complete the Coyote Trail loop and explore the surrounding area. 

The trail itself is just 0.7 miles long, making it perfect for a short, scenic outing. Most visitors spend extra time admiring the triple waterfalls, exploring the small caves behind the falls, and enjoying the lush, shaded environment. 

If you’re planning to take in the sights at a relaxed pace or have a picnic nearby, you might want to set aside a couple of hours to fully enjoy everything Rifle Falls State Park has to offer.

However, it can be done quickly too.

I also love this place because you can camp right there at Rifle Gap State Park or at Rifle Falls State Park directly!

The Winner for Time is…

Rifle Falls!

Rifle Falls is great because you can spend as much or as little time as you have. Only have 15 minutes? Great! Park and take a quick walk to the waterfalls. 

Or, you can really take your time doing the Coyote Trail, exploring caves, and taking in the falls. 

Hanging Lake, on the other hand, is a journey that requires a trek to the lake itself. You have to go all in and commit! 

It is also worth noting that with Rifle Falls, the waterfalls are right at the beginning and the hike is for different angles of the waterfalls. For Hanging Lake, you have to hike to them and then hike back.

Accessibility and Amenities

Hanging Lake

Getting to the Hanging Lake trailhead is relatively straightforward. It’s located just off I-70, and there is a designated parking area. 

However, parking is limited, and you’ll need to reserve your spot in advance as part of the permit system. 

The trail itself is well-maintained, but it’s steep and rocky in parts, so sturdy hiking shoes are a must. Facilities at the trailhead are basic, with restrooms available but not much else, so come prepared.

The trail is not fit for wheelchairs. 

Rifle Falls

Rifle Falls State Park is a bit further off the beaten path, but it’s well worth the drive. 

The park has ample parking, picnic areas, and well-maintained facilities, including restrooms and campsites for those looking to extend their stay. 

The trail to the falls is easy to navigate, making it a great option for families with young children or anyone looking for a leisurely walk. 

We were even chatting about bringing my grandfather in a wheelchair here. 

The Winner for Accessibility is…

Rifle Falls!

Rifle Falls wins by a landslide on this one. It is more ADA friendly (not 100% accessible, just doable) and better for adventurers with limited mobility that can’t do an intense hike. 

I think that it would require some “four-wheeling” and going over some gravel, but I think that with some effort you could get a wheelchair to look at the waterfalls.

The hikes and the caves are not wheelchair accessible.

Reservation Requirements

Hanging Lake

One crucial aspect of planning a hike to Hanging Lake is the reservation requirement. Due to the popularity of this trail and the need to protect its fragile environment, visitors must obtain a permit in advance. 

The reservation system is in place year-round, and during peak season, permits can sell out quickly, so it’s important to plan ahead. 

The cost of the permit helps fund conservation efforts, ensuring that Hanging Lake remains a pristine natural wonder for future generations to enjoy. The permit also includes parking, making logistics a bit easier once you arrive.

Note: due to trail restoration efforts, reservations are extremely hard to come by. When I went recently, I had to get up at 8am on a Tuesday and book my spot right away for the weekend. 

Rifle Falls

Rifle Falls, on the other hand, does not require any reservations. 

This makes it a fantastic option for spontaneous adventurers or those who prefer not to be tied to a strict schedule. 

While the falls can be busy, especially on weekends, you’ll have more flexibility in planning your visit. 

It is very important to note, however, that once the parking lot fills up, the park is considered at capacity. They will turn you away.

The parking lot is quite small, so this happens more often than you’d think. 

Fortunately, the only time I had an issue with this was on a weekend around lunchtime. 

The Winner for Reservations is…

Rifle Falls!

Even though it does fill up to capacity from time to time, Rifle Falls wins because it does not require a reservation.

Still, I would still recommend choosing a weekday morning to visit. 

My entire family drove all the way up from Denver just to do Hanging Lake only to be turned away by the very limited reservations. It was, disappointing, to say the least. 

Pets

Does Hanging Lake Allow Pets? 

Important! Hanging Lake does NOT allow any pets. 

Pets are not allowed on the Hanging Lake trail or in the surrounding area, and this policy is strictly enforced. 

The restriction is in place to help preserve the delicate ecosystem around the lake and to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all hikers. 

The trail’s steep, rocky terrain can be challenging and potentially dangerous for pets, and the presence of animals could disrupt wildlife or contribute to erosion and other environmental impacts.

They did check our car for pets when arriving at the welcome station.

Does Rifle Falls Allow Pets?

Luckily, Rifle Falls does allow pets. 

Pets are welcome at Rifle Falls State Park, including on the trails and around the falls, as long as they are kept on a leash and under control at all times. 

This pet-friendly policy allows visitors to bring their furry companions along for a stroll around the park and enjoy the beautiful scenery together. 

However, it’s important to be mindful of the park’s regulations, clean up after your pet, and ensure that they don’t disturb wildlife or other visitors.

Adventure Level

Hanging Lake

If you’re up for a challenge and enjoy a good physical workout, Hanging Lake is your trail.

The hike’s steep incline and rocky terrain make it more suitable for experienced hikers or those in good physical condition. 

But the reward at the top—an incredibly unique and beautiful lake—makes every step worthwhile. 

The sense of accomplishment you’ll feel when you reach the lake is something you won’t soon forget.

The only part that was a little more “scary” was the steep steps on the cliff right before you hit the lake. Many hikers will go on their hands and knees. This also might be unsettling for those with a fear of heights. 

Rifle Falls

Rifle Falls offers a different kind of adventure—one that’s more about soaking in the beauty of nature without breaking too much of a sweat. 

This trail is ideal for families, casual hikers, or anyone who wants to enjoy a peaceful, scenic stroll. 

While it may not offer the same physical challenge as Hanging Lake, the visual payoff is just as impressive, especially if you take the time to explore the caves and surrounding areas.

However, it might leave some hikers that crave adventure and challenge a little disappointed. 

I think the most adventurous part of Rifle Falls is exploring the caves.

If you are looking for more of a nature challenge, Hanging Lake wins by a landslide! 

Rifle Falls is more about leisure and waterfalls. With Hanging Lake? You earn that waterfall! And wow, how sweet does that victory taste!

Who Should Hike Rifle Falls?

Rifle Falls is the ideal choice for families, casual hikers, or anyone seeking an easy yet stunning outdoor experience. 

It’s also a great option if you’re looking for a spontaneous adventure without the need for reservations. 

I would also recommend it to anyone who enjoys exploring caves at their own pace. 

The falls, caves, and surrounding greenery make it a peaceful and rewarding outing.

Personally, I prefer Hanging Lake because I love a good hike. However, if I was traveling with someone from out-of-town or kids? Rifle Falls would win.
