Key Takeaways
- Arches National Park offers some great sunrise viewpoints as well as epic sunrise hikes!
- Favorite sunrise spots in Arches National Park include The Windows, Delicate Arch, Balanced Rock, and more!
Why Sunrise is the Best Times to Visit Arches National Park
Sunrise in Arches National Park is pure magic, and that means a lot coming from me because I have a strong aversion to waking up early.
Fortunately, I will drag my cute adventuring butt out of my warm RV bed for sunrise at Arches National Park!
As the first light of day creeps over the horizon, the park’s iconic red rock formations come alive with a warm, golden glow.
The soft morning light accentuates the intricate textures of the sandstone, casting long, dramatic shadows that create perfect conditions for photography.
Beyond the visuals, early mornings offer a peaceful serenity—cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and the sounds of nature waking up.
For adventurers and photographers, this quiet window provides the best opportunity to experience the park in its raw, undisturbed beauty.

Best Sunrise Spots in Arches National Park
Below are spots that require minimal effort, but provide great sunrise spots for Arches National Park.
This is for adventurers who don’t want to go on long hikes in the dark, but want to enjoy some Arches National Park sunrises in some iconic places.
Note that some of these require some light hiking, but it is nothing too strenuous.
Turret Arch & The Windows Section
Why It’s Great
The Windows Section is packed with massive arches, and Turret Arch perfectly frames the rising sun through its opening.
Since this is one of the most popular areas in the park, it is also a great time to enjoy this section with minimal crowds.
Hiking Involved
Easy, less than a mile round-trip on a well-marked trail. Although it is considered a “hike”, I put it on this list because it is easy, short, and accessible.
Photography Tips
Arrive early to set up your shot through the arch for a unique sunrise composition.
Balanced Rock
Why It’s Great
This precariously perched rock glows in the early morning light, making for an impressive and accessible sunrise spot.
This is ideal for those seeking a quick sunrise stop without a hike.
Hiking Involved
Minimal—a short 0.3-mile loop trail.
Photography Tips
If you are on a photography journey, there are some incredible opportunities to have the sun peek out right behind the rock!

Fiery Furnace Viewpoint
Why It’s Great
The Fiery Furnace, with its maze of narrow canyons and towering fins, glows with rich, fiery hues as the sun rises.
The interplay of light and shadow creates dynamic and captivating photos.
The viewpoint is gorgeous – with stunning views of Fiery Furnace looking over the La Sal Mountains.
Hiking Involved
No hiking required to enjoy the viewpoint, but permits are necessary to explore inside the Fiery Furnace.
Photography Tips
For photography, focus on the intricate textures and shadows.
If you’re feeling adventurous, consider booking a ranger-led hike to explore deeper into the Fiery Furnace.

La Sal Mountains Viewpoint
Why It’s Great
Panoramic views of the La Sal Mountains bathed in morning light is amazing!
Personally, I liked Fiery Furnace better because you get more “bang for your buck”. However, this one might be less crowded and more peaceful.
Hiking Involved
None; it’s a drive-up viewpoint.
Photography Tips
Bring a telephoto lens for close-up shots of the mountain range.
Courthouse Towers Viewpoint
Why It’s Great
Towering monoliths and spires create dramatic silhouettes against the soft pastel hues of sunrise. The light enhances the texture and depth of these massive formations.
Hiking Involved
None; it’s a drive-up viewpoint with optional short walks nearby.
Photography Tips
This spot is ideal for wide-angle shots and minimalist compositions, especially when low clouds add atmosphere.

Park Avenue Viewpoint
Why It’s Great
The sheer vertical walls and narrow canyon of Park Avenue are breathtaking at sunrise. The warm glow of early light brings out the deep reds and oranges in the rock formations.
Hiking Involved
Enjoy the view from the roadside viewpoint.
Photography Tips
Start early to capture long shadows and glowing walls. Great for landscape photography with a dramatic flair.
On the Side of the Road
You might laugh at this recommendation.
However, the main 18 mile road that drives through Arches National Park is stunning and offers random pull outs.
I was surprised at how many cars just pull over on these pull outs for a good sunrise vibe. I even saw some people in a van with chairs just on the side of the road!
If you see a good sunrise spot, don’t wait! Just pull over.

Best Sunrise Hikes in Arches National Park
Now we are moving on to those who crave a more intense adventure!
Here are the best sunrise hikes in Arches National Park.
Contrary to the last section, these sunrise spots require more effort. They may require you to hike in the dark!
Don’t panic, I promise that once you witness those golden hues casting on the iconic red rock formations, your efforts will not be in vain.
Delicate Arch Trail
Why It’s Great
As the most iconic arch in the park, Delicate Arch at sunrise offers a tranquil experience before the crowds arrive.
The rising sun casts a warm glow on the arch and the surrounding La Sal Mountains.
This is actually the only time I would recommend visiting the Delicate Arch. I tried visiting in the day and was very let down by all of the crowds and heat.
Hiking Involved
A moderately challenging 3-mile round-trip hike with a 480-foot elevation gain.
Hiking Tips
Start hiking at least an hour before sunrise.
Bring a headlamp and plenty of water. If there is a moon, consider wearing a red headlamp. It’s a blast and really reconnects you with nature!

Devils Garden Trail
Why It’s Great
This trail offers a peaceful, early-morning hike leading to the impressive Landscape Arch, one of the longest natural arches in the world.
The soft morning light creates a serene atmosphere perfect for photography.
Hiking Involved
What I love about the Devils Garden Trail is that you can turn back at any time.
Most people suggest going to see the sunrise at the Landscape Arch (about 1.6 miles roundtrip).
However, I am not most people and I’m gonna say see Landscape Arch and then go further to the Partition Arch!
This hidden gem is less crowded and one of my favorite arches in the park. Plus, you might be able to catch the sun peeking over the horizon through the arch itself! Now that’s an epic Arches sunrise!
Hiking Tips
Start well before sunrise to enjoy solitude and cooler temperatures. Bring a headlamp and plenty of water.
If you decide to go past the Partition and Landscape Arches in the dark, please be careful! It is easy to get lost, and there are many drop-offs.

Park Avenue Trail
Why It’s Great
Towering rock walls and unique formations are dramatically illuminated by the first light of day, creating deep shadows and stunning contrasts.
We talked about the viewpoint from the parking lot, but if you are feeling adventurous, you can go do some easy hiking.
Hiking Involved
Easy 2 miles round trip.
Hiking Tips
The trail is relatively easy, but starting early ensures you catch the best light. Great for wide-angle landscape shots.

Tower Arch Trail
Why It’s Great
A more remote and less crowded trail, Tower Arch offers a peaceful sunrise experience framed by towering sandstone formations and the vast desert landscape.
Hiking Involved
A moderately challenging 2.6 miles round trip.
Hiking Tips
Allow extra time for the drive to the trailhead. To get to the trailhead, you must drive on about 8 miles on unpaved roads. This gets washed out easily due to rain.
Bring plenty of water and a headlamp for early starts. The trail climbs a steep rock wall and involves hiking through the sandstone fins and sand dunes.
What Time is Sunrise in Arches National Park?
Sunrise times in Arches National Park vary throughout the year:
- Summer: Around 5:30 AM – 6:00 AM
- Winter: Around 7:00 AM – 7:30 AM
Always check the local sunrise times before your visit to plan accordingly.
I would also recommend hiking to arriving at the sunrise spot at least 30 minutes before, but ideally 60 minutes.
This way, you can watch the sunrise at all stages and you don’t accidentally miss it.
I say this because I planned to hike Devils Garden at sunrise and completely missed it. I ended up just pulling off on the side of the road to bask in its glory!
It was amazing, but I wished I would have planned it out a little better.

Sunrise Vs Sunset
Sunrises and sunsets in Arches National Park each offer their own unique perks.
Sunrises bring a peaceful solitude, with soft golden light illuminating the red rock formations and far fewer crowds, creating a serene atmosphere perfect for photography and quiet reflection.
In contrast, sunsets paint the sky with vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple, casting dramatic shadows and attracting more visitors.
Personally, and I can’t believe I am saying this, I prefer sunrise. There are fewer people and it is more peaceful! However, it is completely up to you!
