Buena Vista is a hiker’s paradise with numerous trails that are easily navigable without a guide. Personally, I chose the Midland Hill Trail via the North Trail to the Broken Boyfriend.

The Buena Vista River Park Trail is also a popular option. These trails offer varying levels of difficulty, making them accessible to everyone from casual walkers to seasoned hikers.

Although you can do this without a tour, they do offer some guided hikes. These are good if you are looking for a more luxury experience.

For those of you who are looking for a challenge, Buena Vista lies within the Sawatch Range. This is the most concentrated area of “14ers” in Colorado, with the closest option being Mount Yale.

Just a warning, these are very intense, high-elevation hikes. Coming from a local, plan ahead, bring necessary gear, start hiking early in the morning, and go slow! Altitude sickness is a nasty beast.

Best Times to Visit

While Buena Vista is beautiful year-round, the best times to visit are during the spring and fall. The weather is mild, and the natural scenery is at its most vibrant.

However, if you go in Spring, realize that you might not be able to climb any 14ers due to snow and the rapids will be more exciting (from the higher water levels) than normal.

What to Pack

Depending on the activities you plan to do, make sure to pack appropriately. For outdoor adventures, bring sturdy hiking boots, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle.

If you’re visiting the hot springs, don’t forget your swimsuit and a towel. And always have a camera on hand to capture the stunning landscapes.

Local Eats

After a day of adventure, you’ll want to refuel at one of Buena Vista’s local eateries.

While walking around Buena Vista, there were several options for food, beer gardens, and even live music.

We choose to stop at the Deerhammer and their whiskey and truffle fries were incredible!
