Overview of Episode 12: The Great Sand Dunes National Park

The Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado is a marvel of nature that often leaves visitors in awe. In the latest episode of Tick It Before You Kick It, Alexandra takes us on a vivid journey through this unique landscape.

From her adventures traveling in a fifth wheel RV to the challenges of hiking on sand dunes, this episode is a treasure trove of insights and tips for anyone looking to explore this hidden gem of Colorado.

About the Great Sand Dunes National Park

One of the first things Alexandra highlights is the sheer beauty and uniqueness of the Great Sand Dunes. The park is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America, some of which tower as high as 750 feet.

These massive dunes are surrounded by lush Colorado landscapes, creating a striking contrast that seems almost otherworldly. Alexandra humorously describes the scene as something out of a Star Wars movie, specifically likening it to the desert planet of Tatooine.

Geography of the Park

The episode delves into the fascinating geography of the park. Thousands of years ago, the area was covered by ancient lakes. As these lakes dried up, they left behind vast amounts of sand.

Over time, winds from the southwest funneled this sand into a low curve, while storms pushed it back, forming the dunes we see today. The sands here are not just ordinary; they are colorful and magnetic, composed of over 200 different minerals and rocks.

Alexandra’s favorite was the black sand, which she found particularly intriguing due to its magnetic properties.

getting to the Great Sand Dunes From Denver

For those planning a visit, Alexandra provides a detailed overview of the logistics involved. The park is about a three and a half to four-hour drive from Denver, with two main routes available.

One route goes through Colorado Springs and Pueblo, while the other goes through Buena Vista. While the latter is more scenic, it involves mountain driving and is slightly longer.

Alexandra chose the route through Colorado Springs and Pueblo for her massive fifth wheel RV.

Accomodation in the Great Sand Dunes

Accommodation options near the Great Sand Dunes are limited but varied. There are a few basic hotels, but Alexandra strongly recommends RVing for a more immersive experience. Penon Flats Campground, within the park, offers 88 campsites.

However, these sites fill up quickly, especially during the summer months, so reservations should be made well in advance.

For those who can’t find a spot within the park or have larger RVs, Alexandra suggests the Great Sand Dunes Oasis, which offers pull-through spots, showers, laundry, and even sandboard rentals.

Hiking and Sandboarding the Great Sand Dunes

Hiking on sand dunes is an entirely different experience compared to traditional hiking.

Alexandra shares a humorous anecdote about a gym enthusiast who struggled with the sandy terrain despite his impressive physique. Hiking on sand requires more effort, so preparation is key.

Alexandra emphasizes the importance of bringing plenty of water and the right equipment. She also enjoyed using her sandboard to navigate the dunes, making the hike both challenging and fun.

Driving Medano PRimative Pass Road

Another thrilling activity at the park is adventure driving on Medano Pass.

This primitive road requires a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle. Alexandra initially underestimated the difficulty but was glad she had the right vehicle for the job. T

he drive involves navigating through sand, rivers, and rocky terrain, offering a unique and exhilarating experience. In the fall, the road is lined with vibrant aspen trees, creating a magical landscape.

Stargazing on the Great Sand Dunes

Stargazing at the Great Sand Dunes is another highlight of Alexandra’s trip. The park’s remote location and minimal light pollution make it an ideal spot for astrophotography.

Alexandra and her companions spent a night stargazing from the dunes, describing it as a peaceful and awe-inspiring experience. She recommends bringing a blanket and a jacket, as it can get chilly at night.

Are Pets Allowed in the Great Sand Dunes?

Pet owners will be pleased to know that pets are welcome in the park, but special care is needed, especially in hot conditions.

The sand can reach temperatures of up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, which can be harmful to pets’ paws.

Alexandra advises bringing pet booties and plenty of water to keep your furry friends safe and comfortable.

Some Short and Sweet Safety Tips –

*Please contact the national park for all up to date safety information and questions about safety. This is not meant to be medical advice, but to make you aware of some ways to stay safe on the dunes.*

Safety is a crucial aspect of visiting the Great Sand Dunes. Alexandra offers several tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

The sand can get extremely hot, so it’s essential to wear appropriate footwear and carry enough water.

Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer, bringing the risk of lightning strikes. Visitors should stay informed about weather conditions and avoid open areas during storms.
