Pet Adventure Gear to Travel with Your Furry Friends

As a full-time RVer with one adventurous dog and two curious cats, I know firsthand how important it is to have the right pet adventure gear for your furry companions.

Adventuring with pets brings so much joy and excitement, but it also requires thoughtful planning to ensure their safety, comfort, and enjoyment—no matter where the journey takes us.

From rugged trails to cozy RV setups, having essential pet gear can make all the difference in creating memorable and stress-free adventures.

Here’s a list of my go-to Amazon products that have been lifesavers on the road and in the wild.

Key Takeaways

Meet the Adventurers

Because they are the stars of this post and modeling this pet adventure gear – here are my furry travel companions. They all travel full-time and have even lived in other countries!

  • Maggie: our energetic and fluffy 11 year-old Sheltie! She loves playing tug-o-war and going on easy hikes.
  • Moe: the infamous flame point Siberian forest cat. He knows he’s beautiful and he isn’t afraid to show it! His ideal day is chilling outside in his tunnel. He lived with me in Hungary during medical school.
  • Emmy: our lady Siberian forest cat. She loves hiking, annoying her brother, and sitting in my lap while we travel with the RV.

Harness and Leash Set for Hiking

I hike with both my dog and my cats! Because of this, I’ve been through an embarrassing amount of Amazon harnesses.

Dog

A sturdy, comfortable harness and leash set is essential for pet safety on hikes.

My doggie is a little escape artist and the only harness that kept her from backing out was this one.

cat

I ended up going with this leash set. I like the harnesses that have two separate buckles.

There are ones with better reviews, but I just loved the little bows on the other option.

I also own a Travel Cat harness. It is a little difficult to wiggle their paws through, but it does feel secure.

Pet Backpack Carrier

For smaller pets or cats that aren’t comfortable walking on a leash, a pet backpack is a great way to bring them along without compromising safety.

I also use this for my cats. In fact, I moved to Hungary with one of my cats and used this backpack for the 16+ hour flight through Germany into Budapest.

Choose one with breathable mesh and plenty of space for them to move comfortably, so they can enjoy the scenery while you do the legwork.

Portable Pet Water Bottle

Keeping pets hydrated is crucial, especially on hikes or during long drives.

This water bottle is perfect because it’s leak-proof and allows you to give your pet water without any spills or mess. It is a pet adventure gear essential!

With a built-in bowl, it’s easy to pack and even easier to use, making it a must-have for on-the-go hydration.

Collapsible Pet Crates and Tunnels

Our Infamous rV Cat Tunnel

When living full-time in an RV, I can’t let my kitties roam around as they please. Therefore, I invested in this portable cat tunnel that they are obsessed with!

And they aren’t the only ones that are obsessed. This often draws a lot of attention by my fellow RVers and campers. It is, surprisingly, my most asked about pet adventure gear product!

We even rigged it so that they can come and go from the tunnel into the RV as they please.

Sometimes, my dog does try to join in on the fun and I have to go rescue her.

Dog Crates

For the doggos, you could get a collapsible pet crate.

Space is a premium in travel and camping, and collapsible pet crates are a lifesaver for storage while still providing a comfortable and secure spot for pets.

They’re perfect for camping setups or simply as a cozy place for your pet to rest, offering both convenience and comfort on adventures.

Long Camping Leash

A longer camping leash is perfect for giving your pet more freedom to roam safely while keeping them close at your campsite.

It’s especially handy for campsites or open spaces where your pet can enjoy the surroundings safely, giving them a taste of adventure without compromising their security.

I originally had a felt one and she went to the bathroom on it. Yucky. That’s why I went with one that I could clean easier.

Pet First Aid Kit

Accidents happen, and it’s always better to be prepared.

A pet-specific first aid kit has essentials like bandages, antiseptic, and tweezers designed with pet safety in mind.

This kit gives peace of mind knowing that you’re ready to handle small scrapes or emergencies on the road.

Protective Booties

For rough trails, hot pavement, or rocky terrain, protective booties are a game-changer in keeping your pet’s paws safe and comfortable.

These booties shield sensitive paw pads from sharp objects, extreme temperatures, and potential injuries, allowing your pet to walk confidently and comfortably on any surface.

Plus, they’re usually waterproof and slip-resistant, making them ideal for wet, snowy, or muddy conditions—no more wiping muddy paws every time they come inside!

I used these for my dog when exploring the hot sand in the Great Sand Dunes.

Pet-Friendly Sunscreen

Yes, pets can get sunburned too! Pet-safe sunscreen is a must for protecting your pet’s nose, ears, and belly on sunny days, especially at higher elevations or on beach days.

It’s a small but mighty addition to your travel kit that shows you’ve got your pet’s health in mind.

Pet Cooling Mat

For hot days and desert destinations, a cooling mat is a fantastic way to keep pets comfortable.

Many mats are pressure-activated, so your pet simply has to lie down to get that cooling effect, making it an easy and effective way to beat the heat.

For our furry doggo, this is her favorite place to be in the summer.

Seat Covers and Beds for The Car

Pet hair, muddy paws, and adventure messes can do a number on your RV seats or car upholstery.

A waterproof, easy-to-clean seat cover keeps the seats protected while giving pets a designated space to get cozy.

Bonus: most covers are slip-proof, so pets can relax safely without sliding around.

Cat Window Perch

For our cats, we got some window perches. Not gonna lie, they love them and are constantly using them.

We actually have two on the RV windows and then one in the car.

My white cat, Moe, never moves from this bed when traveling in the car. It’s his spot. As for Emmy, she has claimed her favorite window bed in the RV.

GPS Pet Tracker

There’s nothing scarier than a pet getting lost, especially in a new location.

A GPS tracker attached to their collar gives real-time tracking, so you’ll never have to wonder where your adventurous pet has wandered.

It’s a smart investment for peace of mind and helps you always keep tabs on your crew.

You can get an official one or just get a collar that is compatible with an Apple airtag.

Pet Life Jacket

Whether kayaking, swimming, or paddleboarding, a pet life jacket adds an extra layer of safety for water-loving pets.

Look for a life jacket with handles, so you can easily lift your pet out of the water if needed.

It’s peace of mind for any aquatic adventure, ensuring your pet can join in the fun safely.

Deshedding Brush

Adventuring outdoors means pets pick up dirt, debris, and extra shedding.

Regular brushing helps reduce fur on your furniture, too, making it a win-win for cleanliness and pet comfort.

Again, I’ve tried brush after brush. All of our pets are longhaired. This one wins by a landslide!

Waterless Pet Shampoo

When a full bath isn’t possible on the road, waterless pet shampoo and spray are lifesavers for keeping your pet fresh and clean.

This no-rinse formula is perfect for quick cleanups after hikes or muddy adventures, leaving your pet smelling great and feeling fresh in minutes.

It’s gentle on fur and skin, easy to use, and a must-have for any adventure where dirt is part of the fun!

Air Purifier

Pets add love and adventure, but they can also add allergens to a small RV space. My kitties will get my allergies from time to time.

Luckily, this compact air filter has been a game changer for my sinuses.

It’s designed for pet hair and dander is essential for maintaining clean air quality, especially in enclosed spaces.

This device keeps odors and allergens at bay, ensuring that both you and your pets breathe easy during travel.
